Apple Beta Developer Program vs. Public Beta

July 3, 20264 min read

If you've decided to test unreleased Apple software, you have two distinct paths: the Developer Beta and the Public Beta. Both will give you access to new features early, but they are tailored to different audiences.

Note: If you decide a beta isn't for you, read our guide on how to downgrade iOS beta to stable.

The Developer Beta

The Developer Beta track is aimed at app builders who need to test their software against upcoming API changes. When Apple announces a new iOS or macOS at WWDC in June, the Developer Beta is released on the exact same day.

  • Release Timing: Earliest access. Seeds usually drop every two weeks.
  • Stability: The most buggy and volatile track. Major battery drain and system crashes are common in the early summer seeds.
  • Cost: Previously required a $99/year Apple Developer account, but since iOS 17, Apple made the Developer Beta track free for anyone with an Apple ID.

The Public Beta

The Public Beta is designed for tech enthusiasts who want to try new features but prefer a slightly safer experience.

  • Release Timing: Usually releases 3 to 4 weeks after the Developer Beta (around July). After the initial delay, Public Beta updates usually drop 24 to 48 hours after a Developer Beta update.
  • Stability: More stable. Apple uses the developer community to catch catastrophic bugs (like device-bricking issues) before releasing that same build to the Public Beta track.

Which one should you choose?

If you are installing a beta on your primary phone, strongly consider waiting for the Public Beta. If you have a secondary test device and want to flash the newest IPSW file the second it drops, the Developer track is for you.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Mac to install the Developer Beta?

No. You can enroll your Apple ID on Apple's developer portal for free, then toggle the 'Beta Updates' setting directly on your iPhone to receive OTA updates.

Is the Developer Beta safe for a daily driver?

Generally, no. Early developer seeds contain serious bugs, battery drain issues, and app incompatibilities. It is highly recommended to only install them on a secondary device.

How do I switch from Developer to Public beta?

Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and simply select 'Public Beta' instead. The next time a Public Beta is released that is a higher build number than your current version, you will receive it.

Can I leave the beta program?

Yes. Turn off 'Beta Updates' in Settings. To remove the beta software completely, you will need to manually restore your device to a stable IPSW file.
