Updating your iPhone wirelessly (Over-the-Air) is convenient, but sometimes you need the reliability and control of a manual, wired update. Whether you are trying to bypass a stuck update, downgrade from a buggy iOS Beta, or simply prefer installing a clean firmware image, learning how to manually install an IPSW file is an essential skill for any Apple power user.
An IPSW file (short for iPhone Software) is the raw firmware package used by Apple devices. When you tell your iPhone to update over Wi-Fi, it actually downloads an IPSW file in the background, unpacks it, and installs it. By downloading the file manually, you bypass Apple's mobile servers and use your computer's processing power to facilitate the update via a USB cable.
Before you plug in your phone, you must secure two things: a backup and the correct firmware file.
First, always ensure you have a fresh iCloud or local computer backup. While a standard IPSW update won't erase your data, a failed update could force you into a restore scenario.
Second, head over to our iOS firmware directory and download the correct IPSW file for your exact iPhone model. Ensure the version you download is currently marked as "Signed", otherwise Apple's servers will block the installation.
