Universal Mac IPSW: How to Restore Any Apple Silicon Mac

Quick Answer

TL;DR: Learn what a Universal Mac IPSW is and how to use Apple Configurator to revive or restore an unresponsive M1, M2, or M3 Mac.

Unlike iPhones which have unique firmwares for almost every model, Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) share a single, massive firmware file known as the Universal Mac IPSW. If your Mac becomes completely unresponsive, shows a flashing exclamation mark, or gets stuck in a bootloop after a macOS beta update, this file is your lifeline.

Revive vs. Restore

When using a Universal Mac IPSW, you have two options in Apple Configurator:

  • Revive: Updates the firmware and recoveryOS to the latest version. It attempts to retain the user's data on the internal volume.
  • Restore: Completely erases the Mac's internal storage, wipes all user data, and lays down a clean installation of macOS.

Because you cannot perform this process on the broken Mac itself, you will need a second Mac to act as the host.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Download the Universal Mac IPSW

Download the latest macOS Universal IPSW file to your working host Mac.

2. Install Apple Configurator

Open the Mac App Store on the host Mac and install the free 'Apple Configurator' app.

3. Connect the Macs

Connect the host Mac to the broken Mac using a USB-C charge cable. Note: You MUST plug the cable into the specific DFU port on the broken Mac (usually the port closest to the hinge on a MacBook, or the port next to the ethernet jack on a Mac Mini).

4. Enter DFU Mode

On the broken Mac, press a specific key combination (usually Power + Right Shift + Left Option + Left Control) to force it into Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode. It should appear as a large 'DFU' square in Apple Configurator on the host Mac.

5. Drag and Drop the IPSW

Drag the Universal Mac IPSW file from your Downloads folder directly onto the DFU square in Apple Configurator. Click 'Restore' to completely wipe the Mac, or right click and choose Advanced > Revive Device to attempt data recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an Intel Mac to restore an Apple Silicon Mac?

Yes, the host Mac can be an Intel Mac, as long as it is running macOS Monterey 12.4 or later and has Apple Configurator installed.

Does this work for Intel Macs?

No. Intel Macs do not use IPSW files for their operating system. They use standard Internet Recovery or bootable USB installers.

Why isn't the DFU square appearing in Apple Configurator?

Entering DFU mode requires precise timing and pressing the exact key combination. It also requires the USB-C cable to be plugged into a very specific port on the broken Mac (often the back-left port). Consult Apple's official documentation for your specific model.

Can I revive my Mac without losing my files?

Yes. In Apple Configurator, right-clicking the DFU square and selecting Advanced > 'Revive Device' will attempt to repair the firmware without touching the user data volume. Only the 'Restore' button wipes the drive.

Do I need an internet connection to use a Universal Mac IPSW?

Yes. Even though you downloaded the IPSW locally, Apple Configurator still needs to contact Apple's servers to verify the firmware signature before it allows the installation to proceed.
