How to Downgrade iOS Beta to a Stable Version

July 3, 20268 min read

Beta software can be exciting, but it often comes with severe battery drain, app incompatibilities (especially banking apps), and unexpected reboots. If you're tired of the bugs, you might want to downgrade to the stable version.

The Golden Rule of Downgrading

You can only downgrade to a stable version if Apple is still digitally "signing" it. If Apple stops signing a firmware, no official tool (Finder or iTunes) will allow you to install it. If you happen to have saved your digital signatures while the window was open, you can read how to save SHSH blobs for future iOS downgrades, but for 99% of users, you are restricted to the currently signed stable release.

Backing Up: A Warning

Backups made on a newer iOS beta cannot be restored to an older iOS stable version. If you made an iCloud or Mac backup before installing the beta, you are safe. If you only have a backup from the beta, you will have to set up your device as new after the downgrade, though data synced to iCloud (Photos, Contacts, Notes) will still return.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Download the Stable IPSW

Go to our homepage and download the latest green 'Signed' IPSW file for your specific iPhone or iPad model. For more info, read What is an IPSW file.

2. Turn Off Find My iPhone

Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My and turn it off. You will need your Apple ID password. This disables Activation Lock temporarily so the restore can proceed.

3. Put Your Device in Recovery Mode

Connect your device to your computer. Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down. Finally, press and hold the Power button until you see the 'Connect to Computer' screen.

4. Initiate the Restore

Open Finder or iTunes. You will see a prompt saying 'There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored.' Hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and click 'Restore'.

5. Select the IPSW and Wait

Select the downloaded IPSW file. Your computer will verify the firmware and flash it to the device. Once complete, your phone will boot to the Hello screen on the stable version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I uninstall iOS beta without a computer?

No. You cannot downgrade or uninstall an iOS beta directly on the device. You must use a Mac or Windows PC to wipe the beta partition and install the stable IPSW.

Will I lose my photos if I downgrade?

If your photos are synced to iCloud Photos, they will return when you sign back into your Apple ID. If they are only stored locally on the device, they will be deleted during the downgrade.

Why am I getting Error 3194 when downgrading?

Error 3194 means Apple is no longer signing the IPSW file you are trying to install, or your computer's host file is blocking connection to the verification server. Read our Error 3194 fix guide.

Can I downgrade my Apple Watch beta?

No. Unlike iPhones and iPads, Apple Watches cannot be downgraded by the user because there is no accessible data port. You must mail it into Apple Support to be flashed back to a stable release.

How long does Apple keep older stable versions signed?

Apple typically leaves the previous stable version signed for only 1 to 2 weeks after a new update is released. This brief window is the only time you can easily downgrade.

Will downgrading fix my degraded battery life?

If the battery drain was caused by poorly optimized beta code continuously polling background processes, then yes, rolling back to stable will immediately restore normal battery longevity.
